Since opening its doors in 2013, Recess quickly became recognized for a curated, unique assortment of fun vintage and contemporary clothing and accessories. With a lifestyle expansion in 2021, Recess now contains a collection of clothing, accessories, and home decor from the 20's to the present, including unique haute couture, non-designer, and global finds.

Recess is an extension of owner Marie Monsod’s signature eclectic style. Monsod felt the rising demand for unique, reasonably-priced vintage designer items, and sources to bridge the gap between couture gowns and rock t-shirts. Recess aims to keep merchandise both aspirational and affordable, and focuses on keeping customers happy. Recess is a resource for designers, stylists, costume enthusiasts, and fashion insiders looking to draw design inspiration. Visitors to Recess come from across the US and around the world.

It all began with a blouse.

Marie Monsod started vintage shopping as a young teen. She developed her personal style early, hunting for Levis at flea markets, thrift stores, and estate sales. She enjoyed the thrill of the hunt and learned to spot hidden gems. She loved to give these finds a new life through updated, modern styling.

One day, Monsod discovered a beautiful beaded blouse on one of her shopping excursions. It was at that moment she realized vintage fashion was her calling. She continued collecting and opened a vintage showroom in 2010, under the name Marie Monsod. Juggling private appointments, trunk shows, and styling requests, Monsod and a fellow vintage colleague decided to bring their brand of resale to the general public with a brick-and-mortar store, and Recess was born in 2013. Monsod became the sole owner of Recess in 2014 and launched Recess Home in 2021.
