"I thought that look was over."
"Well, it's Retro."
- Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the movie 1992
One of my fave lines in the movie, "Well, it's Retro." Hilary Swank and her swanky one liners, am I right? And funny thing, because I just watched the movie 'P.S. I Love You' last night and bawled my eyes out.
Any way, let's talk about these Tony Alamo denim jackets that Marie Monsod is retro-ing. We are obsessed with them. She found our first 'New York' jacket (red/orange) in March of this year, and since then we now have had our hands on FOUR more!! Plus one faux (it's a Jordache, photos below).
[This red/orange New York jacket already sold. This was and is my fave because it has my hometown(s) written all over the sleeves. *sigh*]
Los Angeles - THIS IS A JORDACHE. I'm writing this in all caps so you don't get confused. Do you remember Jordache jeans?! This is also available in store only. Please contact shop directly.
I'm a sucker for a good plain denim jacket that you can throw over whatever you're wearing (like a kimono :D), even patchwork and embroidery gets my blood flowin, but who doesn't want to wear a hand-made, painted, rhinestone bejeweled, 'one of a kind' over the top creation by the mind and hands of a fugitive cult leader?? I'm kidding, btw.
Tony Alamo (born Bernie Lazar Hoffman) and his wife Susan Alamo founded the Alamo Christian Foundation, a Christian cult in 1969 in Hollywood. The church began getting in trouble with the law because of tax evasion, child abuse, and labor violations by running their manufacturing shops more like sweatshops. Tony Alamo himself was arrested numerous times then convicted in 2009 as a child sex offender.
According to an LA Times article from 1989, these Alamo denim jackets were selling for about between $360 to $680 a pop at trendy LA boutiques back then. Dangggg, that's even a lot of money nowadays. Despite Alamo's convictions and lifestyle choices, his business was not taking a hit at all. The annual sales of just the 'Tony Alamo of Nashville' sequin jacket totaled from $500,000 to $1,000,000.
Crazy stuff, right?
Tony Alamo passed earlier this month. May 2, 2017 while in custody in North Carolina. He was 82.
Our Tony Alamo stats so far: 1 California, 3 New York, 1 Hollywood
We can't wait to get our hands on more of his creations, especially Beverly Hills.
[Two New York purple jackets are available in store only. Please contact shop directly.]
New York jacket #1.
New York jacket #2. They look very similar, but this one has more green in it.
California - Already sold.
Hollywood - Will be available online soon.
And how can we forget the end of 'Pretty Woman' :
"Welcome to Hollywood! What's your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some don't; but keep on dreamin' - this is Hollywood. Always time to dream, so keep on dreamin'."
We love us some Alamos. We're excited to bring it back and see how we can revive it with some Recess flair.
Thanks for hanging.
