DRESSCODE: HALLOWEEN FASHION
The arrival of spooky season has reignited our love for all-black everything, and these days, we've been embracing our dark side. Gothic lace, leather, and velvet are speaking to us, and we'll be wearing these six picks throughout the season. Who doesn't love a reason to get spirited and dress up as whomever -or whatever- you want to be?
That said, we're not fans of cheaply made disposable costumes. We love the moodiness of a slinky velvet sheath, the artistry of a gothic, Victorian-inspired lace jacket, or the witchy vibes of a leather corset skirt- all of which can be worked into a costume, but just as easily earns a place in the regular wardrobe rotation. Give us a Yves Saint Laurent skirt or Gianfranco Ferre suit over a plastic mask any day. Yes, it's Halloween- but make it fashion!
That also applies to the ubiquitous pumpkin. We're inspired by the artwork and pumpkins of contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama. When a spotted Valentino dress walked in the door channeling a Kusama pumpkin, our fashionably artistic Halloween dreams came true!
GIANFRANCO FERRE Baroque Buckle Suit & Suspender Set
This belted suit by Gianfranco Ferre is a powerful, badass look fit for any gangster- or the perfect look to Express Yourself as Madonna when paired with a black lace bustier. We love love the fullness of the pleated pant with the bold belt and chain. The handsome pair of suspenders pulls the whole look together.
DERO ENTERPRISES Leather Corset Skirt
This gathered leather corset skirt by Rocco for Dero Enterprises is what we'd imagine the girls from The Craft wearing once they graduated high school. We would add a lace top, tights, chokers, capelet, and broom for a more classic witching look.
MARIA MICHELE Velvet Jeweled Bust Dress
This cocktail sheath by Maria Michele is the perfect dress for any vixen of the dark. We love the jeweled décolleté, which has the regal air of an evil queen. Be sure to add a touch of highlighter in just the right spot, and finish with bold chandelier earrings with your nose held high.
BILL BLASS Sheer Lace Tuxedo Jacket
A tuxedo jacket by Bill Blass hints at a gothic edge in sheer black mesh lace. We would add a Christian Lacroix ribbon choker, lace cravat, and loads of black liner with a blood red lip for a modern look worth of Lestat's attention.
YVES SAINT LAURENT Crushed Velvet Pleated Maxi Skirt
Long crushed velvet skirt by Yves Saint Laurent is what fall dreams are made of. Sophisticated skirt easily pairs with everything, though we'd embrace our inner Lydia Deetz for the night and add a fitted jacket, ribbon chokers, and an oversized flat brim hat, making sure not to say the name Beetlejuice.
VALENTINO NIGHT Silk Dot Dress & Jacket Set
Obviously, we would wear this spotted Valentino dress and jacket set paying homage to Yayoi Kusama, one of the most well-known contemporary artists of our time. She is most known for her use of colorful spots, mirrored installations, and painted pumpkins, among her many achievements. The bright spots that cover her artwork envelope her entire being, symbols of her inner darkness. We would add a fiery red lip and wig to complete the likeness.
