Recess Flip: Highland Park House

Highland Park Recess Flip House Renovation

Welcome to this Spanish style home in Highland Park,California, a historic neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles. Built in 1924, it's a fixer upper with a lot of potential that will be renovated and restored from top to bottom.

Hidden behind gates and leafy hedges, the house was tucked away on a quiet residential street. At first glance, the house's large lot and square footage were ideal for a young family. We immediately fell in love with the tiled roof, curved entryway, beautiful arched windows, and large outdoor patio.

The single family home was a great price due to a un-permitted addition, which was both a positive and negative- but left a lot of room for unrealized potential. We envision this property to be a forever home to a young family who loves to entertain- with room to grow.

Recess Flip is a home and interior renovation project by Recess.

This is the newest addition to the Recess brand, a seamless integration between Ian and Marie’s signature fashion sense into a well-designed home. With years of experience between them, discovering diamonds in the rough is a specialty and passion. Ian and Marie especially appreciate and respect the original craftsmanship and character of homes built between the Art Deco and Mid Century eras. Each home will be thoughtfully renovated from restoring original architectural elements to maximizing space, function, and flow.

Homes will be crafted with a Recess soul throughout, from construction through interior finishings. Ian and Marie’s love for sourcing unique vintage, antique, contemporary, and global decor will be on display in the finished homes. Fully staged homes, and all of their furnishings, will be available for sale upon completion.

Ian and Marie make up the joint forces of Team Shepp. The entrepreneurial husband and wife team have worked together for many years on renovation projects prior to the Recess Flip adventure. Marie developed her signature style as an independent vintage dealer, known for her eclectic mix of one of a kind pieces to vintage designer spanning multiple periods. Ian built his career in the restaurant and bar industry and produced events, managed operations, opened several bars, and owned Los Angeles' famed Key Club on Sunset Blvd.

Team Shepp began their path in building renovation by opening their first lounge bar, Madame Royale in 2009- with Ian leading the construction and Marie designing the space. In 2013, aside from the build-out of the Recess shopfront, Ian also managed the construction of a Los Angeles local bar, The Melrose Umbrella Company. From this project, he has switched gears to focus on building and construction. This next step towards Recess Flip was an inevitable one, from their love affair with vintage furnishings to architecture of decades past, they are excited to share everything they’ve experienced and learned from each other over the years with you all.
